Welcome back to snow season! Well, it’s still pretty early in the fall, but the first colder storms are rolling through North America, and the higher mountains of the west should see a small accumulation of flakes this week.
Short Term Forecast
Forecast for Sunday 9/8 – Thursday 9/12
Two storms will hit the northwest this week, and temperatures will be cold enough for snow to fall down to or below about 10,000 feet.
The first storm will move through on Sunday into Monday (Sep 8-9) with another storm around Wednesday into Thursday (Sep 11-12).
The temperature map shows the path of these two systems, with cooler-than-average temperatures forecast through the northwest this week.
To make us skiers and riders happy, the snow forecast map is alive!
We should see light accumulations on the upper elevations of mountains in Alberta (Canada), Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado.
This early-season snow is pretty normal for early September. As skiers, it’s exciting to see this shift toward winter, though, from a meteorological point of view, it’s not outside the norm.
Forecast for Friday 9/13 – Tuesday 9/17
Moving into early next week, the storm track across the northwest should hold. This means that we will likely see another cool-ish system early in the week with a little bit of snow on the higher elevations in the northwest.
Outlook for Wednesday 9/18– Sunday 9/22
The pattern of cooler temperatures and multiple storms in the northwest may fizzle by the middle of September.
One model shows warmer temperatures taking over most of North America from September 18-22.
Another model is hinting that cooler temperatures will hang around the west coast and northwest.
Uncertainty when forecasting out 10-15 days is natural, so we’ll just wait and see what happens. Confidence in the forecast weather pattern increases quite a bit as we move from the 10-15 day outlook to the 5-10 day prediction.
Thanks so much for reading, and look for early-season updates each Monday morning so that we can begin to get excited for a (hopefully) snowy season ahead.
